why do muslim men always have big beards?

I always see muslim men on the bus or in downtown with big beards. Why?

As far as I know, Mohammed used to have a beard like that so that makes it Sunnah which is following what Mohammed used to do.

I always wondered about this myself. I am a muslim, and I read somewhere that its said that you should have your body hair shorter than a grain of rice or something.
